Saving Energy
There are many ways we can save energy. However fundamentally we look at
reducing our energy consumption, and secondly ensuring that the energy we
consume is green energy or eco-friendly energy.
Clearly much of this relates to electricity suppliers and electrical devices but
we should also consider consumption of gas and oil directly.
So, at a glance, here's a sample checklist of what we can do to save energy: -
- Ensure your electricity supply is green energy
- Fit low power devices such as light-bulbs (see light bulb savings calculator or visit our green shop low energy light bulbs and solar lighting).
- Conserve heat through proper insulation
- Switch off energy consuming equipment when not in use
- Walk or cycle instead of driving
- Consider direct home power generation such as solar or turbines
- Look at eco-friendly powered cars
- Minimise our waste (processing waste consumes energy)
- Minimise our consumption of goods, or at least buy green
In the UK, domestic lighting can account for around 25% of
the total power consumption. Two of the most effective things you can do
to reduce your carbon footprint and save energy are turning unnecessary lights
off when you don't need them, and switching light bulbs to energy efficient
bulbs. Energy efficient light bulbs are normally around 4 times as
efficient, and although more expensive to purchase, actual reduce money overall
as they can last up to 10 times longer.
For outdoor lighting consider solar powered devices. These can work in
cloudy conditions so they are effective the in UK despite the weather!
Have you switched your electricity supplier to a green energy source? Green energy electricity
is electricity generated in an eco-friendly way, whether that is by
wind-turbines, solar, hydro-electric or other similar means. Most
electricity suppliers in the UK now offer green energy options for your power. You
can ask your current supplier for a green or eco-friendly energy supply, or you could try
comparison sites such as green.energyhelpline.com for help choosing the best
energy supplier for you, whether that is on a green or even economic basis.
